ABC's of Publishing Code

"Publishing Code" is what Brightcove calls the code that is used to render players on publisher or affiliate websites. Publishing Code is also called "the code", "player code" or "player snippets". Publishing Code can be accessed from the Brightcove console, from offers sent to you by publishers, or from within a player - such as the "Get Code" viral syndication feature. Brightcove provides four approved publishing codes for affiliates - these include 'Hosted Player', 'JavaScript', 'ActionScript', and 'HTML to Embed'. Publishers get to choose which ones they want to provide to affiliates, so we'll provide some details on each here.

HTML to Embed
To add a syndicated player to a page in HTML format, just copy and paste the Brightcove HTML publishing code into your web site's existing HTML code. Open your web page for editing and paste the generated code the same way you would add an image or other inline element. You can place the player in any standard HTML container on the page, such as a table cell or div tag. When you have pasted the code, save the page and upload it to your web server. There are no additional files to upload because the player and video titles load from the Brightcove service. The player does not place any additional load on your web server or web hosting service. Brightcove takes care of all hosting, bandwidth and storage as part of the Brightcove service.

JavaScript
Javascript Publishing Code is the method most recommended by Brightcove. The Javascript code provides better tracking and a better user experience since Javascript players are able to take advantage of the full features of Flash. On the downside, Javascript is not indexable by the search engines, and some browser settings require additional steps or actions to render Javascript. Finally, some blogging software, content management systems, and social networking services such as MySpace do not handle JavaScript properly, so consider using HTML to Embed publishing code in these situations.

ActionScript
ActionScript publishing code is used to incorporate video into your custom Flash application. To publish using ActionScript you should copy the code and consult an experienced flash developer to implement.

Hosted Player
This format is only available when publishers use Brightcove to host their player. It allows you to post a link on your site that will open a popup containing the player. To publish you can copy the link or use the convenient IFRAME or Popup code to embed or link this player to your site. Use the JavaScript or HTML to Embed code if you require greater control over site integration.
