What is the Brightcove Publishpod?
The Brightcove Publishpod is a desktop application for encoding and uploading video and other media assets to Brightcove. The Publishpod makes creating and uploading content fast and easy. It's available for both Mac and Windows computers. The Publishpod comes with the Brightcove service for no additional cost.
How does it work?
The general workflow is as follows:
- Add files to the processing queue using either file browse or drag-and-drop
- Set encoding options for any of the files that require encoding
- Initiate processing
- Files requiring encoding are encoded in into Flash video
- All the files are automatically uploaded (you will be prompted to sign in to Brightcove so that the asset can be provisioned to the correct account)
Why should I use the Publishpod?
The Publishpod makes encoding and uploading files faster and easier than other approaches. The encoding results in a high-quality video file for a better user experience on playback. The uploader handles large files and results in more reliable uploads to the Brightcove service.
Does it work on a Mac?
Yes.
What file types are supported?
The Publishpod encodes video to Flash video. On the Mac it uses the Sorenson codec, which encodes to Flash 7 video. On Windows it uses the On2 VP6 codec, which encodes to Flash 8 video. On either the Mac or Windows, Publishpod encodes from the following source formats: .3GP, .DV, h.264, .MPEG2, .MPEG4, QuickTime, WMV. The Windows version also supports AVI, which is not available on Mac computers.
If you want to use your own encoder, and then use the Publishpod to simply upload the video, you can upload any type of video Brightcove supports (Flash or WMV).
What sizes are supported?
- 480x360 (4:3 recommended size), 320x240 (4:3 compact size), 480x270 (16:9 recommended size), and 320x180 (16:9 compact size)
- Auto-cropping (Mac-only): Crops to TV safe area for 4:3 and 16:9, crops 4:3 ratios to 16:9 (eliminates letterbox bars), and crops 4:3 to 16:9 + TV-safe
- Enables the following data rates: 500kbps, 400kbps, 300kbps (We recommend 500kbps)
- Supports one- and two-pass encoding
- Allows deinterlacing during encoding
How do I get access to the Publishpod?
When you log into the Brightcove Console, there is a link to download the Publishpod on the "Dashboard" tab. It will then be available via your Start Menu on a PC or Applications directory on a Mac.
Should I stop using the Quick Upload feature in the Assets library?
Not necessarily. This is available if you use another encoding application such as Sorenson Squeeze or already have assets you want to load directly in to your asset library.
Files uploaded using this method must be smaller then 100mb.
May I use other products to encode my video?
Yes. Flix, Sorenson Squeeze or Adobe Flash may be used to encode to the FLV format. Other products from Microsoft or Adobe may also be used to create WMV for paid downloads.
Can I keep the encoded videos on my computer?
As a result of our agreements with the different codec vendors, you are allowed to keep a copy of the encoded video with the Mac version. With the Windows version, the encoded files are deleted from your local computer after they are uploaded to Brightcove.
I can't see the download button, even though I have accepted the license agreement. What should I do?
Sometimes the download button is not viewable at lower screen resolutions. Please try increasing your resolution to resolve the issue.
Or, if you have Firefox installed, please try the download with this browser.
Submit a support request if you still can't see the download button.
I am connecting to the internet through a proxy. When I try to sign in using the Windows Publishpod I get 'Unable to Authenticate' errors.
If you have a proxy connection, you may need to configure Publishpod to use the proxy.
Click on the settings button within the Publishpod to enter the proxy's host, port, and if necessary, username and password.
