Geo-Filtering
Brightcove's Advanced Geo-Filtering service is a paid feature available to Premium customers at this time. If you are interested in upgrading your Brightcove account to a Premium account please contact Brightcove for more information.
You can use Brightcove's geo-filtering feature to restrict access to content in a player based on the viewer's geographic location. For example, if a player includes content that, for legal reasons, cannot be distributed outside the U.S. and Canada, you can set geo-filtering on your player to keep viewers outside of the approved countries from accessing that content.
The ability to use geo-filtering to restrict players to the U.S., U.K., or Canada is available to all Brightcove accounts for free. Standard IP-address based filtering technology is employed for this purpose.
Brightcove Premium publishers may also elect to use advanced geo-filtering, for an additional fee. Features of advanced geo-filtering include:
- Filtering technology is facilitated by Quovaâ„¢, a leading provider of geographic monitoring services.
- Quova makes daily updates to the IP address database used to filter content, resulting in more accurate geo-filtering.
- The following additional countries are currently supported, with continued updates to the country list in the future: Argentina, Australia, Austria, Chile, Denmark, France, Germany, Norway, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland.
- Advanced geo-filtering can be applied to individual titles or to players.
Geo-filtering can be configured to be exclusive or inclusive of the list of countries you select. This means that you can specify countries that should have access to the content in question (inclusive). Alternatively, you can specify countries that should not have access to the content in question (exclusive). You can configure this option when you set up geographic filters.
To enable advanced geo-filtering for your Brightcove account, please speak to your Account Manager or a Brightcove salesperson.
Using Advanced Geo-Filtering
If advanced geo-filtering has been enabled for your Brightcove account, you can use the Brightcove Console to set up geo-filtering on a title or on a player.
Setting geo-filtering on a title
To set up geo-filtering on a title using the Brightcove Console:
- Create or edit a title.
- Click the Scheduling tab.
- In the GeoFiltering section, select Filter title access by country.
- Select Included or Excluded. If you select Included, only viewers in the selected countries will have access to the title. If you select Excluded, then everyone except the viewers in the selected countries will have access to the title.
- Select one or more countries from the Available Countries list on the left. You can use the shift or ctrl keys to select more than one country. Click Add to move them to the Selected Countries list on the right.
- Click Save.

Setting geo-filtering on a player
To set up geo-filtering on a player using the Brightcove Console:
- Create or edit a player.
- Click the Security/Filtering tab.
- In the GeoFiltering section, select Filter player access by country.
- Select Included or Excluded. If you select Included, only viewers in the selected countries will have access to the player. If you select Excluded, then everyone except the viewers in the selected countries will have access to the player.
- Select one or more countries from the Available Countries list on the left. You can use the shift or ctrl keys to select more than one country. Click Add to move them to the Selected Countries list on the right.
- Click Save.
