Bumpers

Bumpers are short video clips that can be added to a title or directly to a player:

  • Pre-roll title-level and player-level bumpers are available to all Brightcove publishers.

  • Bumpers are supported in all 2.0 player templates.

  • A bumper video asset should be between 3 and 15 seconds in duration.

  • Any bumper you select at the player level will override bumpers set for titles in that player.

  • Bumpers have playback priority, meaning that they will play back before any other content associated with the player or title. For example, if you have a title pre-roll ad and a title-level bumper, the play sequence would be: 1) bumper, 2) ad, 3) full-length video.

  • Title-level bumpers are virally syndicated with the title. Also, if your default viral player has a bumper specified, the player-level bumper will play back when your title is virally syndicated.

  • Bumpers do not support logo overlays . If a logo overlay is specified for a title or account, it will be hidden while the bumper plays.

  • Bumpers do not play back when assigned to Pay Media titles.

Before you can assign a bumper to a title, consider preparing your bumper video content and uploading your bumper assets into the Brightcove service . However, you can also upload files during the title creation process.
Note: You upload bumper video assets using the Quick Upload function in the Brightcove Console rather than the Publishpod. For premium publishers using Batch Provisioning , you can upload bumper video assets and assign bumpers to titles using the Manifest.

To assign a bumper video to a title:

  1. Select the Titles tab from the Brightcove Console.

  2. Click the New Title button in the lower left, or click the Edit button to edit an existing title.

  3. Fill in the required information for the Title on each tab. Choose the Videos tab on the left when you are ready to add the Bumper video to the title.

  4. In the Pre-roll Bumper Video (.FLV) section, click Select File to choose from the list of previously uploaded bumper videos in your Brightcove account. Or, you can upload a prepared bumper video now by clicking Open File Upload.

  5. Once you have selected the bumper video asset, click Save to commit your changes to the title.

Note: To have a title-level bumper video play, you need to click the Players tab and create or edit the player displaying the title. Then click the Setting tab and select the Display bumpers defined at the title level option.

For general bumper info, please scroll to the top of this page. Regarding player-level bumpers:

  • A player-level bumper, when set, will override title-level bumpers in that player only.

  • Bumper videos have playback priority, meaning they will play before other video content in the player. For example, assume that a video ad is set to play on player load.
    • If the player is set to autoplay, then the player-level ad will play first, followed by the bumper, the title-level ad, and the title's full- length video.
    • If the player is not set to autoplay then the bumper will play and then the player will return to the load state, requiring further user interaction to play other content.

To assign a bumper to a player:

  1. Click the Players tab on the Brightcove Console.

  2. Click the New Player button at the lower left, or click the Edit button to edit an existing player.

  3. Click the Settings tab to add a bumper video to the player.

  4. Select one of the two bumper playback options in the Bumpers section:
    • Display bumpers defined at the title level: The bumper videos that are set for titles in this player will play back as defined at the title level.

    • Use player-level bumper: Click Select File to choose from the list of previously uploaded bumper videos in your Brightcove account. Or, you can upload a prepared bumper video now by clicking Open File Upload. When you select this option, the bumper set at the player-level will play back once when the player first loads. If you select player-level bumpers but do not choose a bumper asset, both player-level and title-level bumpers will be disabled. Any title-level bumpers will not play back in the player when you select this option.

  5. Click Save.
