Creating a Syndication Offer

A syndication offer is a Brightcove-hosted web page that publishers make available to others who may want to incorporate a publisher’s video Player in their own website or a Flash-based application. The offer page lets potential affiliates preview and request the Player. This preview allows viewers to see the complete player in action for non-Pay Media Titles or, for Pay Media Titles, viewers can play the Flash preview video and choose whether to purchase or rent the WMV full-length video.

Before you create a syndication offer:

To create a syndication offer:

  1. From the Syndication page, select the player that you want to syndicate.

    1. Choose the Syndication tab from the Brightcove Console.

    2. When you first choose this tab: You will see text that orients you to working in the Syndication section of the Console. To access the work area itself, click "Continue to Section." To skip this information from now on, clear the "Always show this message" checkbox in the lower left. To view this information again later, click "Help" in the upper right.

    3. From the Manage Offers tab, click the New Syndication Offer button on the lower left.

    4. Select a video Player to make available for syndication from the list of Players in your account.

    5. Only one Player can be associated with each syndication offer. However, you can create as many syndication offers as you like.

    6. [Optional] Click the Preview Player button in the upper right to review or check that you have selected the correct Player for syndication.

    7. To navigate among pages in the Syndication area: Either choose a tab on the left (Details or Images) or click the Next or Previous buttons, if available. Do NOT use your browser Back/Forward options, as these may cause you to exit the Console. If you do click Back accidentally, simply click your browser Forward button to return to the Console (without having to sign in again).

    8. Click Next or select the Details tab on the left.

  2. On the Details page, enter a name, description, and choose approval and notification options.

    1. Enter a name for the syndication offer in the Offer Name textbox.
(Important: Viewers of your syndication offer page will see this name and may refer to it when they request your Player.)

    2. Describe your syndication offer in the Video Player Description field. (Important: Viewers of your syndication offer page will see this description.)

For example: Include the type of content you will provide, how often you will update the content, how long you plan to make the Player available for syndication, any special requirements for affiliates, etc. (Max = 250 char’s)

    3. The more information you provide in the description, the easier it will be for affiliates to determine whether they want to add your Player to their site or other location.

    4. Accept or edit the approval and notification settings.

    5. Approval Method:
      • By default, you will have the ability to explicitly approve or deny each affiliate request to use your video Player. Choose this setting for a managed syndication strategy.
      • Or, choose to allow anyone to use the Player for an open syndication strategy. Important: If you choose this option in combination with the HTML publishing code (see below), the only way you can later revoke access is to delete the offer. [Syndication > Manage Offers > offer name > Delete]
      Request Extended
      Information:
Click this box to request more detailed affiliate contact information in addition to the email address.
To view affiliate contact information later from the Brightcove Console: Click the Syndication tab, then Manage Offers.
      • Before syndication request approval: The email address is viewable on the Incoming Requests tab page.
      • After syndication request approval: The email address is viewable on the Manage Offers tab page.
Notification: Check this box to receive an email notifying you each time someone requests this player. Consider entering an email address for the request email notice to go to an address that is different than the one you use for Brightcove sign-in.

If you accept the default to NOT receive email notifications: You will need to explicitly check for new syndication requests (Syndication > Incoming Requests).
Distribution: Listing in a public directory (the default) makes your syndication offer available for discovery on Brightcove.com.

Clear this checkbox if you will be making private syndication offers for this Player.

    6. Select one or more of the Player publishing codes for others to use in incorporating the Player in their website or application. (For a totally open Player distribution strategy, consider checking all three options.)

    7. Click Next or choose the Images tab on the left.

Choose this code … For allowing others to insert your Brightcove Player in …
    JavaScript

    (JavaScript is
    the preferred
    code for
    publishing a
    Player using
    Brightcove.)
A web page (HTML) or in a pop-up window.

In general, accept this default. The JavaScript code ensures that your syndicated Player will be restricted to only the URLs specified in the affiliate’s request. This code also enables publishers to track the Player’s playback activity through reports available from the Brightcove Console.

ActionScript A Flash movie (SWF) or Flex application. The code is in ActionScript.
HTML A web page (HTML) or in a pop-up window. Anyone receiving this Player code can share this code with anyone else.
    • Choose HTML for websites that disallow JavaScript posts (blogs or social networking sites such as MySpace).
    • You will, however, lose the ability to control where (location URL) this content is displayed and some reports capabilities otherwise available from the Brightcove Console.
    • If the HTML option is unavailable (grayed out) and you want this available: Disable domain restrictions by editing the Player [Players > player name > Edit > Details > Content Security > Restrict the player to your web domain?]. When you return to edit the syndication offer, the HTML publishing code option will be available.

  3. [Optional] On the Images page, upload images to enhance the appearance of your syndication offer.

    1. Click Select, then either choose from a list of previously uploaded files or click Open File Upload to upload images. When choosing images, consider that the background color of the syndication offer page is white. (View sample syndication offer showing image placement)

    2. Publisher Logo: Insert your logo in JPG format. It will appear in the top left of the syndication offer. (Max = 230x60 pixels)
Offer Promotion: Create a graphical headline in JPG format to promote your syndication offer. Will appear in the top right area of the syndication offer. (Max = 468x60 pixels)
Syndication Still: Use a Still image in JPG format that represents the content of your video Player. Will appear to the left of the offer details area. (Max = 480x360 pixels)

    3. Click Save.
You return to the Manage Offers tab with your player syndication offers listed on the left.

  4. Preview your syndication offer and then share it with others.

    1. Preview your syndication offer by clicking the Preview Offer button on the right.

    2. Let others know of your Player syndication offer using a Brightcove-supplied URL, whether through general promotion or by making a private syndication offer.

To edit a syndication offer anytime: Click the "Syndication" tab, select the Player offer from the list on the "Manage Offers" tab page, and click the "Edit" button below. Choose from the tabs on the left, make your changes, and save them. You can edit a syndication offer, even after you have received inquiries from potential affiliates for it.
