Quick Start Guide for Pay Media

PLEASE NOTE: Pay media will be discontinued on July 31, 2008. Pay media is no longer available for new Brightcove customers whose Brightcove account was created after April 24, 2008. Pay media for all customers will be discontinued permanently on July 31, 2008. For more information, see the Pay Media End of Life FAQ.

This guide will walk you through building a Pay Media player with Brightcove using your own video assets. We recomment that you print this tutorial and read it as you use Brightcove.

To receive payments, make sure to provide your PayPal account information: Sign in to the Brightcove console and click "My Account" in the upper right, then click "Receiving Payments." Enter the email address associated with your PayPal account and click "Save."

Encode your Video Assets into Windows Media Video Format (.wmv)

  • There are several software applicatoins capable of encoding high quality video in the Windows Media Format. We recommend Microsoft's Window Media Encoder which is available for free from the Microsoft website. (Windows Media Encoder)
  1. Download, Install, and run Windows Media Encoder
  2. If not prompted when you start the program, click "New Session."
  3. Select "Convert a file" from the "Wizards" tab and click "Ok."
  4. Next, when prompted for the original file and output location, browse to the original file, then select a location and create a file name for the resulting Windows Media Video file.
  5. When prompted for how you want to distribute your content, select "File download (computer playback)."
  6. At the next prompt, select "DVD quality video (1 Mbps VBR)" for video encoding rate and "High definition quality audio (VBR)" for audio bit rate.
  7. On the next screen, you are asked for information about the file you are encoding. This information is optional but can be useful if the classification information is available.
  8. The last page confirms the settings you have selected before you begin the encoding process.
  9. Finally, click "Finish." If the checkbox marked "Begin converting when I click finish" is selected in the Wizard window, encoding will begin immediately. If not, when the Wizard window closes click "Start Encoding" in the main program window.
  • Note: Video encoding can be quite demanding on your computer system. We recommend that you initiate the encoding process at night or at other times you are not using your computer.
